Hindman Settlement School was responsible for launching Knott County's adult literacy program in 1978. The Settlement remained entirely responsible for the program until 1987, when it began receiving support from the Kentucky Literacy Commission and the Kentucky Department of Adult Education. In 1999, the Settlement School donated land for construction of the four-story multi-purpose Knott County Opportunity Center, which now houses the Knott County Adult Learning Center and other programs.
The Adult Learning Center provides adult literacy and other adult education services, in partnership with the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) and Hindman Settlement School. The program includes adult basic education and General Equivalency Diploma (GED) instruction.
