Parents + Students

Program Eligibility

Young BoyIn order to determine if a child will benefit from the dyslexia education services offered by Hindman Settlement School (After-School Tutoring, Summer School or Reading Lab Partnership), an individual evaluation is necessary.

Student/Child Evaluations
The Settlement School offers these evaluations once a month. The evaluation costs $75 per child and typically last three hours. Evaluations are conducted across the road from the James Still Learning Center in Room 216 of the Knott County Opportunity Center (located off of Route 160 in Hindman, Kentucky). We encourage evaluation of young children because the chance of preventing failure is much higher for younger children.

A parent or guardian must accompany the child. If a parent or guardian signs the appropriate forms, someone else can bring the child.

To schedule an evaluation, call 606.785.4044. We will be glad to answer any questions you have.

We Cannot Make a Diagnosis
Hindman Settlement School provides services for emotionally healthy students who have language-based learning differences. Hindman Settlement School staff are not qualified to diagnose whether your child has dyslexia. Our evaluation will only determine whether your child stands to benefit from the educational services we offer.

We do not diagnose learning disabilities. The children we serve learn differently and we have found proven methods that will help to accommodate how they learn.

Non-Discriminatory Policy
Hindman Settlement School admits people of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
