There are many ways to contribute to Hindman Settlement School. If you have questions on whether a particular gift will be useful, please call or e-mail our
Development Director.
Make a Donation
An unrestricted donation to Hindman Settlement School is the most direct way of helping to ensure we can continue to operate our programs and maintain our facilities.
- Cash Gifts
Checks should be made payable to Hindman Settlement School.
- Credit Card Gifts
Donating online is the easiest way to make a credit card gift. We accept VISA, MasterCard and Discover. If you are uncomfortable donating online, please call our office and we can take your credit card information over the phone.
- Online Recurring Gifts
When you donate online, you can set up a recurring gift schedule that makes it easy to repeat your donation periodically (monthly, quarterly, etc.). We will send you an annual statement and receipt each year. For as little as $20.83 per month, you can become a "Friend of Hindman Settlement School."
In-Kind Gifts
The Settlement School receives gifts of stock, property, books and other tangible goods and/or services. It is usually best to check with our Development Director before making such a gift, to ensure the proposed gift is acceptable under our Gift Acceptance Policy. The Settlement School purchases many goods and services from the local and regional community. We maintain a program
wish list for those who wish to address specific needs. We only count in-kind gifts valued at $500 or more toward donor club totals.
Sponsor an EventThe Settlement School hosts several fundraising
events each year that offer opportunities for businesses and individuals to sponsor a program.
Our sponsors are recognized in publications and on our web site.
Shop at Marie Stewart Museum & Crafts ShopOur
Crafts Shop is a juried consignment shop whose goal is to provide a market for the work of local and regional crafts people. Purchasing items from the Crafts Shop helps to support local artisans and to pay operating expenses for the shop.
Volunteer
Hindman Settlement School has a history of utilizing dedicated
community volunteers to accomplish its mission. If you have time and skills to offer, we may just have a placement for you. Volunteer opportunities range from working with the Dyslexia Program to working in the Crafts Shop or helping to maintain our archives. All volunteers are interviewed by the executive director. Volunteer placement depends on whether there is a match between skills and needs and whether housing and other arrangements can be worked out. The Settlement School also works in partnership with the
Mennonite Central Committee of Appalachia to place volunteers.
Collect Labels, etc.
Hindman Settlement School participates in a couple of
collection programs that provide credit or cash for food labels, used cell phones and ink jet cartridges.
Help to Educate Others
The more people understand language-based learning differences like dyslexia, the more likely they are to get help for children at an early age. Children who learn differently are not stupid, the just learn differently. When we accommodate their learning styles, they realize their academic and social potential and can lead fulfilling lives.
Start a Tutoring Program
Local After-School Tutoring programs are a great way to meet the needs of children who live outside of the areas served by the Reading Lab Partnership. Our
After- School Tutoring program depends heavily on parent volunteers.
